But the fact that there’s still so much pushback, even from high-ranking officials like the Bundestag president refusing to fly the rainbow flag, is honestly disappointing. Social liberalism is all about protecting individual freedoms and celebrating diversity, so symbolic gestures like flying the flag matter—they show whose rights and identities are truly respected. The backlash and increased security just highlight how much work still needs to be done against intolerance and extremism. That said, I love how activists and allies responded by painting the metro station; it’s a great example of peaceful, creative protest. Ultimately, visibility and solidarity at events like this are crucial for pushing back against hate and making real progress.
